We are excited to be expanding on our kids program! We have a great group of kids currently participating in our kids classes on Thursdays and will be adding a second day to the program. This Tuesday we will have trial kids classes at 4 and 5. These classes will be open to kids 5-10 years old (if you have a 4 year old that can hang with the big kids they’re welcome to try it, if they’re newly 4 it might not be the best idea right now). We will be determining the class schedule for fall based on your feedback and desired class times so please bring your kids Tuesday and see what it’s all about!
Maria H. is joining the Outlier coaching crew and will be working with our kids! Here’s a little more info about her for those of you that don’t know her.
“Hello, my Outlier family!
My name is Maria and for those of you that don’t know me from the early classes, here’s a little bit about me:
I’ve been into fitness my entire life. When other kids were playing video games or watching television, I was outside climbing rope, trees, walls, or anything I could find! I have always preferred to be moving around and doing something active and if I was sedentary, it was only to exercise my mind at the library.
From childhood I tried several different sports until I tried wrestling in 8th grade. I loved it because it was intense and forced me to challenge myself more than any other sport at the time. I was one of the only females in a predominantly male league all the way through high school. I was also captain of our high school’s JROTC physical fitness team where my passion for fitness found another kind of structure and I was given the opportunity to lead others in the same lifestyle.
In my late 20’s I got into another sport: street luge racing. It was intense, but dangerous and when I was 27, I crashed and went off a cliff. I suffered a compound fracture of my radius, broke my spine, and was told that I might never walk again; I was devastated. After a period of self pity, I decided that I wasn’t going to let anything keep me down and got to work. With no health insurance at the time, it was up to me to get better and I was determined to do just that. I studied what I needed to do for physical therapy and made myself do the work. In a way the doctors were right, I wouldn’t really walk again–I would run, jump, climb, and lift!
Now that I have full use of my body and then some, I compete in as many CrossFit and endurance/OCR events as I can. I have competed in different countries and have even taken the podium a few times, but that’s not enough for me; I want to help others feel the way I do.
I’ve coached many people in the obstacle racing community, but I found my true passion in coaching children. I think that by starting them young, they will come to find that there is no limit to what they can do mentally and physically. My goal is to get kids excited about fitness, let them have fun while they do it, and to show them that what they learn in the gym can be applied to everyday life.
I’m looking forward to working with your little ones soon!”
