Although we are still holding off on large scale competitions open to the public, we will be moving forward with an Outliers only Halloween Throwdown on Saturday October 23rd. The competition will be focused around fun, community, and inclusivity. And since it is Halloween, costumes are certainly encouraged.
This competition will also be a fundraising effort for the families of the sailors who died in the Navy helicopter crash on August 31st. Military families have always been important at Outlier, and we are taking this opportunity to support them via this fundraiser. Proceeds from the competition will be donated to the GoFundMe set up for the families:

WOD #1 – “Styx”
For time [15:00 cap]:
3000/2850/2700m row
One athlete rowing at a time, switching as needed. The athlete exiting the rower must perform 10 burpees over the rower before their partner can start. A minimum of 2 transitions (20 burpees) is required.
Scoring
1 second will be subtracted from a team’s overall time for each burpee performed. For example if a team finishes in 14:00 while performing 50 burpees, their adjusted time would be 14:00 – 50 seconds = 13:10.
Monitors will be set up to count down. The workout ends when the required number of meters is met, or when the time cap is up, burpees are not required at the end.
WOD #2 – “The Walking Dead”
8:00 for each athlete to establish a heavy set of the following complex:
1 deadlift
1 clean
1 front squat
1 hang clean
The complex must be completed unbroken. Teams will share a bar (two bars will be provided for MF teams), one athlete may lift at a time. Weights may be taken on and off the bar as needed. The lift must begin before 8:00 is up, and may extend beyond the cap to complete the complex.
Scoring
Sum total of both partners heaviest successful lifts.
WOD #3 – The Ring
For time [9:00 cap]:
40 synchro DB goblet lunge
40 toes-to-rings
40 synchro DB snatch
40 toes-to rings
40 synchro single-arm DB thruster
Dumbbell weight = 50#/35#
Toes-to-rings may be scaled to knee raises (from rings). DB weight may be scaled to 40#/25# (or further, if needed). Teams scaling that perform any movements scaled will rank lower than those performing as prescribed.
Movement and Synchronization Standards
- DB goblet lunge – Synchro standard: both teammates must end the rep standing tall with knees and hips locked out at the same time. For the lunge, DB must be held in hands in front of the chest (horizontally or vertically). One knee must touch the ground for the lunge to count. There is no requirement to alternate legs.
- DB snatch – Synchro standard: both teammates must finish the rep standing tall with knees, hips, and arms locked out and DB overhead at the same time. Both heads of the DB must touch the ground to start the rep. There is no requirement to alternate arms.
- Single-arm DB thrusters – Synchro standard: both teammates must finish the rep standing tall with knees, hips, and arms locked out overhead at the same time. For the thruster, each teammate will have a single DB. The DB shall be held in the rack position during the squat and pressed out overhead to complete the thruster. Reps may be split between arms as needed.
- Toes-to-rings – One athlete works at a time, split the reps up as needed. Feet must pass behind the vertical plane of the rings at the start, and both feet must touch or pass-through the rings at the finish of the rep.
