This month we bring to you Pam Toomes as one of our featured athletes of the month. In my opinion Pam represents what CrossFit is all about. When CrossFit was created, it wasn’t about creating monster athletes that you send to the games. It was about helping the regular person get to the best possible health and fitness that they can reach. For most people that is still what it is about and this is why I want you to meet Pam.
Pam was introduced to CrossFit via her daughter Alex who started CrossFit about 3.5 years ago with a group of friends. Pam was someone that was into fitness and staying active. At 57 years old she teaches yoga and Zumba in her spare time. As she saw Alex get more and more into CrossFit she was intrigued and decided to give it a try.
Before Pam started her CrossFit journey she had a hip replacement surgery. She used CrossFit as a part of her rehab plan, from the beginning we had to modify and adapt certain movements for her. Pam never let that stop her from giving it all she had. She quickly developed strength in movements that she never thought possible. She quickly became a regular face in the gym and her smile and positive energy transmits to those around her. Pam has battled breast cancer and has had knee surgeries while she has been CrossFitting and she didn’t let those things stop her. She would take small breaks from her training but as soon as she received clearance from her doctors she was back in the gym trying to get faster and stronger.
Pam is a shining example of what it means to be CrossFit. She finished 9th out of 21 in her age group in the Southern California Region in this year’s CrossFit Open and she successfully met her goal which was to get top 10! She makes sure to attend regularly every week, you will always see her at community events with a big smile and working her hardest all while coaching and teaching her classes still, being a mom to two children, a dog mom, and living life to the fullest!
Todd Cady is our morning athlete of the month.
Fun facts about Todd. He is freakishly strong with a front squat of 365. He was a pro baseball player. He was a catcher for the Marlins and Caught for Alan Hebert, who also comes at 8:30 am!
When did you start?
I started in 2013. I was looking for something different than the usual gym routine. This type of training reminded me of when I was an athlete. You show up, and all the thinking is done for you.
What is your least favorite movement?
Overhead squats! I had shoulder surgery back in my baseball days and they give me a tough time. The coaches here have really helped with my mobility but it is a struggle.
What is your favorite movement?
My favorite movement is back squats. My shoulders are really tight and they don’t bug me.
What do you like most about Outlier?
Everything! The coaches do a great job of scaling workouts so that I get a good work out but am safe. It also is right on the way to work and has showers.
Todd is consistent and works hard every day. We love having him at Outlier!
