So you’re ready to make a change in your diet or get back on track with healthy eating. That is AWESOME! I encourage you to check out the official 21 Day Sugar Detox page and consider purchasing the books for yourself. Is this necessary? No. Is it mandatory to do the program? No. Will it help you? ABSOLUTELY YES! Go here and order it now, it will make you’re life easier. It takes a few days for the books to arrive so don’t wait! This book has an awesome explanation of the program, tips for success and easy to make recipes to support you on the way! You don’t need to get the cookbook if you don’t want it but I like it and think it’s worth the extra $10!
Owning a gym for the last 5 years and being offered all sorts of product information, attending seminars, and using my self as a guinea pig, I have tried several different programs/approaches. By far, the 21 Day Sugar Detox (21DSD) is my favorite. So much so, that once I’m done getting my masters in nutrition, I plan to implement THIS program with clients, and not bother to reinvent the wheel.
The premise behind this approach is simple. Focus on eating whole foods that are nutrient dense and do not perpetuate sugar cravings. Over consumption of carbohydrates/sugars (refined, simple, “natural” etc) all cause insulin to be released. Insulin is a storage hormone and causes carbohydrate to be stored as fat in the body. Insulin and glucose work in a balanced state. An abundance of glucose causes a release of insulin, which in turn causes a drop in glucose. This creates a craving for more sugar, thus usually resulting in consumption of more sugar… More sugar = more insulin = more carbs stored as fat. If your goal is weight loss you can see how this becomes a huge problem. If your goal is to feel better, you should also be able to see how these sugar highs and lows are a problem.
Furthermore, when blood sugars are not controlled and insulin is constantly being released and your body is trying to balance, it is under stress. The stress hormone cortisol becomes produced in abundance. Cortisol is the hormone that comes into play with the fight or flight response. Your body will go into survival mode and non-essential hormones will take a backseat. Non-essential hormones include thyroid hormones needed for metabolism and sex hormones. You end up with a double whammy on that on that one. The moral of the story here is sugar is bad, real bad…
Our goal, and the goal of doing a 21 Day Sugar Detox, is to help you get on the right track. Does this mean you can never have sugar ever again? OF COURSE NOT! Does this mean you should carefully consider what you eat and the benefit/nutrition content of that food? DEFINITELY!!! What is more important to you? A bag of flaming hot cheetos with your lunch? Ice cream after dinner? Popcorn at the movies? A glass of wine or cold beer after a long day? Or how about feeling great and knowing you made positive choices that will help you reach your goals? (I hope you picked the last one there). What we are asking with this challenge is that you put yourself FIRST for 21 days. Make decisions that will foster success and dietary habit changes. After the 21 days, allow yourself to have the foods that you love and “can’t live without” on a limited basis. If you really stick to the plan for 21 days, you’ll probably find that those foods aren’t a satisfying as you originally thought.
There will never be a perfect time to start a nutrition challenge. There will almost always be a birthday, holiday, happy hour, or some other event where you will have temptations. Most days at work you’ll find temptations if you work anywhere where people bring in food to share. Don’t let that stop you! Sign up with us TODAY to jump start your nutrition and lifestyle and start being healthier than yesterday! Email us now to get more info on an upcoming nutrition seminar and challenge at Outlier! Group challenge will start Friday May 1 (this means it will be over before Memorial Day)!
